Szell stitch pot holders / Łapki do garnków - muszelki

I have left with some 100% mercerised cotton yarn (Pattons, col. 1205) from a previous experimental project and thought it would be enough to make a new set of pot holders. I was looking for an elegant and relatively easy pattern to follow and found this lovely shell stitch pattern. The applications of this pattern are numerous and it can be used for projects such as coasters, blankets, pillow cases, table cloths, pot holders, bags, purses, carpets. It all depends on available materials and the hook size.

A full step by step description has been given by MYpicot (4025 quilt) and by  Lahoma Nally-Kaye (beautiful shells blanket) on the Ravelry website. Although the primary version of this pattern comes as a square (a video tutorial can be found here), after some modifications is can be converted into a rectangular (a video tutorial can be found here).

Overall, I used 40 g of 100% cotton yarn for each pot holder, crocheting with a hook of 3 mm size. The final measurements are as follow 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm).

The borders were made of two rows of a single crochet stitch using a 2.5 mm hook. The pot holder hook was made of 20 chains, which in the second round were strengthened by a row of single crochets.

And that's how look like the final pot holder. I have absolutely fallen in love with this pattern and certainly will be using it again and again :) Let me know in the comment box below how do you find this pattern?

This is a very simple and unisex design which always works! I have already done several hats using this pattern. The size of the hat on the photo is approx. large and can be easily regulated using thinner/thicker yarn and a specific crochet hook (smaller or bigger). Let's start from creating a magic circle. Chain 3 stitches, which equals to one double crochet. Then cast further 23 double crochets around and join the first with the last double crochet using a slip stitch.   To start a new row chain 3 stitches - this equals to one double crochet. Throughout the second row we will be making 3 double crochets in each double crochet from a previous row. This should result in 72 stitches. Join the first with the last stitch using a slip stitch. I know, it may sound a bit crazy as at the very begining hat will be very wavy. Do not worry, as the hat lenghtens, the texture will straighten up.  Following from the third row onwards, we will continue makin...

Single crochet pot holders / Łapki do garnków - półsłupki

Using further leftover cotton thread, I decided to make a different type of pot-holders. Here they are! Aren't they lovely, are they? An English version of step-by-step video tutorial you can find here . The same video tutorial is also available in German and in Polish .  I used just over a 50 g of a 100% cotton skein (Drops Paris - col. 35 vanilla, 39 pistachio, 43 green, and 5 mm hook) to make a single pot-holder. You may wish to explore this pattern by playing with colours, e.g. single, double or treble. I like this pattern very much as it is very easy to follow and very quick! Especially, if you do not have much time and budget, but you would like to make a small gift for your family or friends. Two-colour  pot-holders are slightly larger as I have done one row more, comparing with a 3-colour one. Only the basic crochet skills are required, i.e. , to make a chain, a slip stitch and single crochet (double crochet - UK).  You start with croch...

Swivel (stepping texture) hat / Czapka ślimakowa (schodkowa - ukośna)

Today I would like to present a very simple pattern for a winter hat, which is done from the top to the bottom. The pattern consists of chain stitches, slip stitches and double crochets (BR treble crochets) only. It is not only very easy to make but it also looks very impressive. I have done several hats this way and everyone really likes them! The measurements given below are for the hats I made for my nieces, aged 10-12 years. Overall, I used 110 g of yarn (Drops Alaska, col. 11 - dark red, and col. 15 - midnight blue) for a hat. The hook size was adjusted to the yarn, and in this project I applied 4.5 mm instead of recommended 5 mm. For an adult person I would recommend yarn that could be worked with a hook size equal to 5-6 mm. We start creating the hat in the same manner as the universal hat design described in the previous post. Let's start from creating a magic circle. Chain 3 stitches, which equals to one double crochet. Then cast further 21 double crochets...
